The SA Facility Spotlight is on our Port Facilities!

SA Recycling, the largest scrap metal recycler in the Southwestern United States, features two deep sea bulk loading port facilities; one located in the Port of Long Beach and the other in the Port of Los Angeles. SA Recycling Terminal Island and SA Recycling Long Beach are widely recognized and remain the port’s only metal recycling export businesses.

Our Terminal Island facility, serving the southern California area since 1967, incorporates state-of-the-art storm water treatment and dust control systems while also operating one of SA Recycling’s four mega shredders (used for shredding and processing scrap steel).

Both SA port facilities feature the ability to load bulk cargo ships and use a similar procedure. These facilities handle bulk loading of scrap to be exported to countries like Turkey, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand and India. In 2007 15.6 million metric tons of ferrous scrap, valued at more than $5 billion, was exported out of the U.S. to 133 foreign countries. The process of loading a vessel with 40,000 metric tons of recycled steel usually takes 4-5 days.

These port facilities are important members of the SA Recycling family of companies as well as their own port communities. It is important that these facilities operate under the Best Available Control Technology (BACT) and continue to actively take part in the Port of Technologies Development Center. SA Recycling continues to be recognized as an industry pioneer in materials processing, recovery, and recycling. Our successful business model focuses on people, innovation, and inventiveness while never losing sight of the importance of safety, the protection of the environment, and the belief in community responsibility.

We are proud to have been given the 2009 San Pedro Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year award and 2010 Long Beach Chamber Destination Tomorrow award.
